Duke of Edinburgh's Award expeditions
Beyond Adventure have been providing Duke of Edinburgh's Award training and assessment programmes for a number of years for schools & youth groups. We are an Approved Activity Provider for the expedition section of the Award and offer expeditions at bronze, silver and gold levels.
Our training expeditions include expedition planning, packing, route cards, facilitating the group to a decision re their assessment expedition aim, as well as the necessary skills training. At the end of the training expedition, students will receive an action plan to facilitate them moving to assessment.
We also provide further skills training days as required which is particularly of benefit for those wishing to undertake a river or sea journey in open canoe or kayak.
Beyond Adventure will provide an instructor on training courses and an expedition supervisor for qualifying expeditions per group of 5-7 participants (this number changes to 6-8 for open canoe journeys). We can also provide an assessor if necessary.
Methods of Travel
We can offer training and assessment using the following methods of journey:
- Open canoe
- Mountain Biking
- Sea kayaking/ touring kayaks
Throughout Scotland and to Europe and North America by special arrangement. We generally work with schools or colleges to arrange a venue which suits your skills and previous experience. The group leader, school or college will arrange transport to and from the expedition area but we can also help with this if the group is arriving in the area by public transport.
In keeping with the aims of the award, students are expected to provide their own personal equipment and food. Beyond Adventure can provide specialist equipment (e.g. canoes, buoyancy aids, expedition barrels etc).
Camping. Students are expected to bring their own camping and cooking equipment as well as supplying their own food.
Each training or assessment group will contain a minimum of 5 and maximum of 7 participants. (For open canoe groups numbers will be either 6 or 8 to facilitate doubles paddling.)
